Kruger National Park and the Panorama Route

Kruger National Park is seen as the top tourist attraction in South Africa. The park is 2 000 000 hectares (19 685 square Km) and forms part of the Kruger Trans-Frontier Park with neighbouring countries.

The park has large species diversity, such as: 114 Reptiles, 1980 Plants, 404 Trees and Shrubs, 224 types of Grass, 147 Mammals, 52 Fish, 517 Birds and 35 Amphibians. The density of permanent game is unrivalled, and provides visitors with unbelievable sights and sounds of the variety on view.

On route to Kruger, the Panorama Route offers visitors the opportunity to view some of the most beautiful and natural wonders of South Africa, such as the Blyde River Canyon (3rd largest in world), Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Gods Window and many more. The landscape and climate changes continuously from high lying open grasslands, to mountainous forests and low lying Bushveld area. 

Accommodation varies from basic self catering chalets in the park, to top lodges and guesthouses in and bordering the park. The suggested trips all vary according to budget limitations, but any combination can be made up. 

Various trips can be done to the area, ranging from 3 days to 10 days, or combinations thereof. Trips can also start and end at Kruger Mpumalanga Airport, to connect with flights to or from Johannesburg or other South African destinations. 

Please keep in mind that Kruger falls within a Malaria area. Guests are advised to use Malaria Prophylactics and Mosquito repellent, and to consult with a travel doctor before arrival.

Tour 5: The Combination tour: Kruger, Panorama and a Private Game Lodge: 6 days, 5 nights

Ideal for persons who want to experience Kruger Park in its purest form, as well as the pampering and luxury of a Private Game Reserve. The tour combines the best of both worlds. The private game reserve chosen is very rustic, and is an African wildlife experience at its best. The small and intimate eco- friendly camp has no electricity, but a lot of soul. Other private game reserves can be chosen, but prices will need to be quoted separately. 


Tour 6: The Best of Kruger: North to South: 10 days, 9 nights

Ideal for persons who want to explore the whole park from North to South. See areas of the park that are less frequented by people, but teem with wildlife. A little time for relaxation, before departing on another sunset game drive on open vehicles.

Travel over the spectacular Long Tom Pass before arriving at the Misty Mountain Lodge. The Lodge is situated in the surrounds of natural and man made forests, and is also within a heritage site. After checking in, take a guided walk or mountain bike ride through the forests, or just relax at the pool to enjoy the views of the forests below.

Day 02- Panorama experience to Kruger: Distance for Day: 200 km

Today is set out to explore the scenic Panorama Route including God's Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the magnificent Blyde River Canyon . Enjoy lunch in the town of Graskop , with all its interesting arts and craft galleries. Continue the scenic drive towards the Lowveld area and Kruger National Park . After entering the park at the Paul Kruger Gate, the first game viewing starts. We check into Skukuza Rest Camp, situated on the banks of the Sabie River . Enjoy a wonderful braai (barbecue) under the stars, prepared by your tourist guide.  

Day 03- Kruger experience: Distance for Day: 200 km

After an early morning wakeup call and coffee, depart on an open vehicle drive lasting three hours. On the return, enjoy a heart warming breakfast. Continue driving through the park in the air conditioned vehicle towards Berg en Dal, or Pretoriuskop. Rest Camp. Lunch can be enjoyed at one of the picnic sites in the park. Check into the Rest Camp for the following two nights.  Relax at the swimming pool, viewing the animals at the river, and enjoy a traditional South African Buffet dinner at the Restaurant.  

Day 04- Kruger experience: Distance for Day: 200 km

Day 02- Panorama Route to Kruger National Park : Distance for Day: 250 km

Today is set out to explore the scenic Panorama Route including God's Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the magnificent Blyde River Canyon . Enjoy lunch in the town of Graskop , with all its interesting arts and craft galleries. Continue the scenic drive towards the Lowveld area and Kruger National Park . Check into the Premier Protea Hotel Kruger Gate for 3 nights. This hotel is ideally situated on the banks of the Sabie River , and guests can view the animals form the viewing deck overlooking the river. Dinner is served in a traditional open air Boma, after which guests can relax around the campfire and enjoy the starlit skies above.  

Day 03- Wildlife of the Kruger National Park : Distance for Day: 150 km

Enjoy a full day’s game drive on an open vehicle, accompanied by an experienced nature guide.  Breakfast packs are provided by the lodge, to enjoy on route at one of the rest camps or picnic areas in the park. Arrive back at the lodge during the mid afternoon, to relax at the pool. Dinner is once again served in the Boma area.  

Day 04- Wildlife of the Kruger National Park : Distance for Day: 150 km

Enjoy another full day game drive on an open vehicle in the park. Arrive back at the lodge at midday, to relax at the pool. The last night’s dinner is once again served in the Boma area.  

Alternative to the above: Guests can choose to rather do a late afternoon game drive followed by a traditional bush braai (barbecue) in the bush before returning to the lodge. This trip is done on a private game reserve.  This gives them time to relax in the morning, rather than waking up early.

We do a morning game drive through the park towards the Orpen gate. Brunch will be at one of the picnic sites in the park. We exit the park at midday, for the short drive towards Tangala Authentic Safari Camp, where we will be staying for the next two nights.  

Tangala’s small and intimate 10 bed camp has been specifically designed to be eco-friendly and private.

No noisy air conditioners, electric lights or televisions. Instead they offer spacious bedrooms- cool in summer, warm in winter, kerosene lanterns for light, “donkey boilers” (fire geysers) for hot water and birdsong for music, topped off with high quality white linen and mosquito nets- real rustic luxury.

The central area includes a bar, dining and breakfast area, lounge, Boma and swimming pool.  

Two daily game drives by an experienced ranger and spoor tracker, and daily bushwalks promise to be an unforgettable experience. Tea, coffee and snack are served before and during game drives.

After the last morning game drive and breakfast, we leave Tangala towards the Panorama route.

We will visit the magnificent Blyde River Canyon , Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Gods Window and some scenic waterfalls before arriving at Graskop. Enjoy lunch in this town with all its interesting arts and craft galleries. Continue the scenic drive towards the Pilgrims Rest. Check into the historical Royal Hotel, a classic example of the bygone era. Enjoy exploring the old mining town on foot, before relaxing and enjoying a wonderful dinner.  

Day 06- Scenic drive to Johannesburg : Distance for Day: 450 km

Day 01- Scenic drive to Limpopo province and Tzaneen: Distance for Day: 500 km

Depart in a northerly direction from Johannesburg . We travel through the agricultural land of the Limpopo Province , via Tswane ( Pretoria ), Bella Bella (Warmbaths), Modimole (Nylstroom), Makopane (Potgietersrus) and Polokwane (Pietersburg). (Names in brackets indicate previous names of towns and cities).  Lunch and rest stops on route.

From Polokwane we travel down the scenic Magoebas Kloof Pass to Tzaneen. This subtropical area is one of South Africa ’s most productive agricultural and forest areas.

Check into the Tzaneen Country Lodge, and explore the surrounding areas on foot.

Enjoy a hearty dinner at the Lodge.  

Day 02- Scenic Rural drive to Punda Maria Rest Camp in Kruger: Distance for Day: 200 km

After exploring more of the attractions in and around Tzaneen, we start travelling through the rural countryside towards Kruger. Experience typical rural countryside, seeing the traditional ways of the folk who live around the area. The route we follow will be pass DuiwelsKloof (scenic passes), Mooketsi (Largest tomato growing area in SA), and Giyani. Arrive at the Punda Maria Rest camp, where we will be staying for 2 nights. After enjoying lunch, relax at the poolside before embarking on your first open vehicle game drive at sunset. Return after sunset to the rest camp, and enjoy a wonderful braai (barbecue) under the stars, prepared by your tourist guide.  

Day 03- Punda to Pafuri area- the northern areas of Kruger: Distance for Day: 150 km

After an early morning wakeup call and coffee, we start driving to the most northerly parts of the park. We visit the Quiver tree forests only found in this area, and Crooks Corner, where South Africa , Zimbabwe and Mozambique meet on the banks of the Luvuvhu and the mighty Limpopo Rivers .

Enjoy a brunch prepared by your tourist guide, before travelling along a different route back to the rest camp.  Relax at the swimming pool, before doing a late afternoon game drive. Tonight we enjoy a traditional South African Buffet dinner at the Restaurant.  

Day 04- Bush walk and drive to Letaba Rest Camp: Distance for Day: 170 km

After an early morning wakeup call and coffee, its time for something different. Participate in a 3 hour bush walk, which is guided by armed nature guides with intimate knowledge of the nature.

After breakfast and checking out, we start driving in a South Easterly direction towards the Letaba Rest camp. See how the eco-zones and natural scenery starts changing on route. We have rest stops at Babalala picnic spot, and Shingwedzi (lunch) and  Mopani Rest camps. Arrive at the Letaba Rest camp, where we will be staying for 2 nights.  Tonight we enjoy an a la carte dinner at the Restaurant.  

Day 05- Full day open vehicle drive: Distance for Day: approximately 100 km

Once again time for something different. Enjoy a full day’s game drive on an open vehicle, accompanied by an experienced nature guide. The vehicle is for the group’s private use, so departure and arrival times can be determined by the group. Breakfast and lunch will be at one of the rest camps or picnic areas in the area. We will also visit the Elephant museum and interpretation centre. Dinner is once again a barbecue prepared by your tourist guide.  

Day 06- From Letaba to Skukuza Rest Camp: Distance for Day: 160 km

After an early check out, we continue in a Southerly direction towards the Skukuza Rest Camp. We have rest stops at Satara rest camp (breakfast), Nwanetsi picnic site, Orpen Dam viewpoint, and  Tsokwane Picnic site (lunch)  Arrive at  Skukuza Rest camp, where we will be staying for 2 nights. 

Relax at the poolside before the evening sunset drive, followed a traditional Bush Braai at an open air Boma. Return after the bush braai viewing the nocturnal animals from the vehicle.  

Day 07- Panorama Route : Distance for Day: 250 km

Again something different from viewing the wildlife. We leave the park for the day, to explore the scenic Panorama Route including God's Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the magnificent Blyde River Canyon . Enjoy lunch in the town of Graskop , with all its interesting arts and craft galleries. We return to the park via the Paul Kruger gate, and arrive back in Skukuza around 16h00. Relax at the swimming pool, viewing the animals at the river, and enjoy an a la carte dinner at the Selati Restaurant, (old train carriages converted into a restaurant.)  

Day 08- Full day open vehicle drive: Skukuza to Komatipoort: Distance for Day: approximately 100 km

Enjoy a full day’s game drive on an open vehicle, accompanied by an experienced nature guide. The vehicle is for the group’s private use, so departure and arrival times can be determined by the group. Breakfast and lunch will be at one of the rest camps or picnic areas in the area. Your luggage will be transferred to the next stop. Exit the park at Crocodile Bridge , the most southern part of the park.

Check into the Bucklers Africa Guest Lodge, which is situated on the banks of the Crocodile River , and borders onto the park. The Lodge is unique, with a 2 km view of the riverfront below, and see the animals coming to drink and graze at the waterfront right in front of you. Dinner will be prepared by the host, and enjoyed outside viewing the animals.  

Day 09- Crocodile Bridge to Malelane area- the Southern areas of Kruger: Distance for Day: 100 km

Enjoy breakfast on the veranda overlooking the park. The last day’s drive in the park is relaxing, covering the roads alongside the Crocodile River , towards the Malelane gate. Enjoy lunch at the town of Malelane , before returning to the lodge. Relax at the swimming pool. Our farewell dinner is at a famous Portuguese restaurant close by. (Mozambique Prawns and Portuguese delicacies).  

Day 10- Scenic drive to Johannesburg : Distance for Day: 450 km

Enjoy a relaxing breakfast at the lodge, we depart towards Johannesburg . It is a scenic, casual drive, via the towns of Nelspruit, Waterval Boven, Machadodorp, Belfast and Middelburg.  Lunch will be enjoyed on route. Arrive in Johannesburg in the mid to late afternoon.
